Background of the Study
In the next few months, the researchers will be entering Senior High School in which the researchers have to choose a certain Strand/Track. Junior High School students must have that ideal career for themselves as early as now. The students are given a chance to pursue their career with a lot of knowledge, because of the additional two years in senior high school. There are some instances that it is not easy as most of people who are not yet ready to face a new chapter of their life. They are having a hard time to choose a career because they’re looking for a career that is in demand.
This research shows that one of the reasons why students find it hard to pick a career is because they are affected by their second thoughts and from what’s surrounding them. This research suggests that a variety of influences/factors such as interests, parents’ or family decision, socio-economic status and peer pressure are likely to trigger students’ doubt that makes choosing what career to choose difficult for them.
Few parents recognize this impact and still believe that they have something to do with the career choices of their children. It has been a great deal between the child and the parents because sometimes the parents wanted their children to be what they want them to be, not what their children wanted to be. Some parents are expecting their children to be someone that the wanted to be when they were younger. By the time their children move into adolescence, they begin seriously considering their futures, often looking to their parents either as role models or for career advice. Sometimes children are not given their freedom to choose the course they want. They are being forced to take up something that they might not be good at and they might fail in these things and take upon pressure to themselves.
Another factor affecting the career choice of students is peer pressure. Being in a circle of friends is part of the student’s life. In junior high school choosing a career is a trend, having ideas for senior high school is very tricky and a very hard decision. Being left out by their peers is very frustrating that is why the students follow them on what they want to take not what the students wanted. Sometimes the students just follow them because they can’t make up their mind, the students can’t decide by themselves. The students need to be mature to choose the right path to take.
Socio-economic status can affect the career choice of the students because, in order to get into a university there are times that their socio-economic status couldn't afford the-all-year round tuition of that certain school. In that case, if students lack from financial support these students can be granted with a scholarship programs and in return they should maintain their grades to be able to have a continuous financial support.
The last factor is the interest of the students. When people ask about their career plans there are times that they feel confident, or worried, ready or not-so-ready, of course when students are confident in the path that they’re going to choose they’ll be able to enjoy that path all along till they reach its peak. This factor will be the greatest factor of all the four because without interest in their career students will not have the ability to be a successful student. Many students depend on their interest when choosing a career.
Choosing a career is often considered a major turning point of a student. This kind of decision alone has the potential to open the door for success or close the door of opportunity. Career plays a very fundamental and significant role in the life of an individual because career is something that is very hard to decide especially as their lives will depend on it. Career planning is one of the most important steps students can do in regards to applying to colleges for their own best outcomes.
According to Herr (1970) at the age of 17, students are capable of making realistic career decisions. Since Grade 12 students graduating in July, 1994 are at the stage of making a decisions as to go to post-secondary education or directly to the job market most of them already gone through a long process of weighing the significance of various factors. A confirmed survey of over 700 high school students in NSW. Importantly, it found that students who were uncertain as to what they’d like to do in their future career share some important characteristics they made their subject selections on others’ recommendations and not because they were interested in them. The career choice that students make is embedded in their perceptions of the “ideal job” and their career decision-making maturity.
